In the 1970s, Ma Jie (Zhang Zhang), an urban educated youth, came to a rural area in the northwest to jump in and was attracted by the braying of the beautiful donkey in the village - Hei Liu. Ma Jie felt that Hei Liu wouldn't let him ride. After a work-related injury, he stole anesthetic and gave it to Hei Liu when he was getting stitches in the clinic. Captain Dalian (played by Yue Hong) thought Hei Liu was sick and was worried. Ma Jie miraculously "cured" Hei Liu, won the trust of Dalian and the team, and became a livestock breeder. While Ma Jie feeds the donkey, he secretly falls in love with Caifeng (played by Bai Jing), a young girl in the village. At the same time, Ma Jie became increasingly dissatisfied with Hei Liu's special treatment of only breeding and not working, and was secretly angry with Dalian for his argument that "donkeys are worth more than people". In the process of venting his anger, Ma Jie actually broke Hei Liu's "lifeblood". Hei Liu, who was unable to breed or work, was slaughtered by Ma Jie, but he never thought that Hei Liu's younger brother, Donkey Hei Qi, would never be sworn in with Ma Jie.
