In 1929, Vietnam was a French colony. A 15-year-old French girl (Jane March) studied at a girls' boarding school in Saigon. She went home during holidays. Her mother ran a very small school with very little income. She has two brothers. The eldest brother Bill is addicted to drugs and is domineering. The second brother Paul is cowardly by nature and is often bullied by the eldest brother. One day, the girl said goodbye to her mother as usual and took a ferry back to school. On the boat, she met a wealthy Chinese young man (played by Tony Leung Ka-fai) in a black car. He was the only son of an overseas Chinese millionaire.
