Ashin's Story [Film and TV Commentary]

In Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, a small mountain village located on the upper reaches of the Mogami River in Yamagata Prefecture was covered by thick snow. Tanimura's family sat around and lived in poverty. The 7-year-old girl Ashin (played by Hamada Kono) did not get the good news that she could enter the classroom. Instead, she was ordered by her father Zuo Zao (played by Inagaki Goro) to work as a helper in the lumber shop. In order not to embarrass his mother (played by Aya Ueto) and grandma (played by Miko Yoshimura), Axin had to reluctantly separate from his family. Life in the lumber shop is very difficult. Ashin doesn't have enough to eat or sleep, and she is framed for stealing money. She angrily escapes from here, but is rescued in the cold and windy mountains by hunter Shunsaku (played by Mitsushima Shinnosuke) who has escaped military service. In the cold winter, Ashin felt the long-lost warmth. It's just that the good times don't last long, and she will eventually be separated from her brother Shunsaku. Even if she returns home briefly, there will be more hardships and tests waiting for this stubborn little girl on the road ahead... This film is the movie version of the Japanese classic morning drama "Oshin".
