Children in the Mist

Di comes from northern Vietnam, a mountainous area shrouded in fog. She is 12 years old and a Miao girl. In this ethnic minority, girls are married off at an early age. Before marriage, there is often a controversial custom of "marriage snatching", in which a girl is "robbed" by her future husband on New Year's Eve, and negotiations are subsequently negotiated between the two families. Di's sisters and their mothers were no exception, so it was not unusual to see women and girls talking openly about sex and married life in preparation for marriage. At the same time, Di was also attending school, where she was exposed to completely different values. Even Di's mother, in her own way, tried to warn her daughter about child marriage. Here, children are not only influenced by traditional culture, but also connected with the outside world. In the film, director Yan Xiale talks about the conflict between the long-standing customs here and modern values. As her first feature documentary, the film focuses on the challenges faced by a Hmong girl, but most importantly, it is a moving film about a strong teenager, not just a victim.
