Two thousand years ago, the sorcerer Nhagruul, who was obsessed with corrupting sentient beings and spreading despair, fell into panic when he was dying. With a hatred for the living, Nagur sold his soul to the demon lords of the Abyss in order to preserve his evil soul. In an excruciating ritual, Nhagrulls skin was flayed into pages, his bones hammered into a cover, and his diseased blood became the ink to pen a book most vile. All those who come into contact with this book are driven to madness by its power, or are corrupted and deeply evil by the evil knowledge contained in it. Pain and blood followed the followers of Nhagruul as they spread their Master's dark dream. From unclean pits and ancient tombs, foul things rise to the surface, destroying everything in a frenzy. The cities and kingdoms of Karkoth were eroded by the evil that spread like a plague, until a group of warriors rose from the ashes - the Knights of the Rising Sun, sworn to restore hope to all lands.
