The father (Tom Hanks) of the nine-year-old boy Oscar Scheer (Thomas Horn) is killed in the 911 accident, leaving a shadow on his young heart. Oscar accidentally found an envelope with "Black" written on it and a key. Oscar thinks this is a clue his father left for him, and there must be some secret hidden behind the key. Oscar tells the secret to the old man who can't speak (Max von Sydow). Every weekend thereafter, Oscar began searching for people with the last name "Black" in the five boroughs. During his lifetime, his father planned a "reconnaissance adventure" game with Oscar to find the Sixth City, and told Oscar: Don't stop looking.
The film is based on the novel by author Jonathan Safran Foer.
