Four friends from a village in Punjab have a common dream: to go to England. The problem is that they have neither visas nor plane tickets, and a soldier promises to take them to the land of their dreams. Talking about "Donkey", actor Shah Rukh Khan said that the English title of the film is "Donkey". But its title is "Dunki" because in India some people pronounce "Donkey" as "Dunki". He further stated that "Donkeys" is "a story about people wanting to come home... when you finally get the call." The film shows the negative phenomenon of Indians rampantly using illegal backdoor routes called "donkey flights" to immigrate to countries such as Canada and the United States, but Shah Rukh Khan also clarified: "It is a comedy film, and his (referring to director Rajkumar Hirani) films are always comedy and a lot of mixed emotions, and things about the country. So, it is a big road movie that travels around the world and ends up back in India."
