The story takes place in the Changbai Mountain forest area in the 1940s. Lumberjack Wei Dashan (played by Ning Cai) was paralyzed by a tree while trying to save others. His greedy family soon ran out of money. Helpless, Dashan turned to his apprentice Heita (played by Zhao Jun). He wanted to repay the single Heita with the local custom of "making a gang".
