Franny (Meg Ryan) is an introverted and conservative university teacher. She lives with her sister in a shabby and cramped single apartment in Manhattan, New York. But the monotonous life and boring work were far from filling her inner loneliness. Franny was collecting information for a book on American slang when she happened to spy on a man and woman having oral sex in the bathroom of a bar. This scene was deeply etched in her mind, especially the tattoo on the man's wrist. Not long after, Detective Malone (Mark Ruffalo) found Franny because of a corpse dismemberment case. She was surprised to find that the tattoo on Malone's wrist was exactly the same as the man in the bar bathroom. Love and curiosity aroused Franny's strong desire.
