The Crying Woman

Guizhou woman Wang Guixiang (played by Liao Qin) and her husband worked hard in Beijing. Unexpectedly, an accident disrupted their not-so-rich but peaceful life. The husband got into a quarrel and was imprisoned for hurting someone's eye. Guixiang, who lost her financial resources, had no choice but to return to her hometown with her 3-year-old son. In order to raise bail, Guixiang tried every means to raise money. Eventually, under the guidance of his old lover, he became a professional funeral director specializing in crying at funerals. Times have progressed, but they are still unsettling. Nowadays, it is difficult for people to shed a tear for the elderly people who have passed away in their families. Guixiang's appearance not only earned the bereaved family a lot of face, but also made her savings increase day by day. Life for her and her son is gradually improving, and her husband sees freedom on the horizon... The film won the Swiss Screenplay Project Grand Prize, the French Ministry of Culture and Foreign Affairs Southern Fund Award, and the Kodak Image Screenplay Award at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.
