There have always been two views on this work in Japan: one view does not consider them to be masterpieces of social literature, and the other views them to be excellent works of erotic literature. The artistic feature of the novel is that the author observes the social world in detail and describes it delicately. The characters are vividly displayed on the page, and the customs, habits, utensils, and clothing are like reproductions of that era.
