In 1953 in New York, insect killer Bill (played by Peter Weller) was engaged in lonely personal writing, with only two friends aware of his literary attempts. Bill's wife Joan (played by Judy Davis) is addicted to injecting insecticide powder. Bill visits the drug treatment doctor Benway for her, and is soon summoned by the Narcotics Control Bureau. There he encounters a talking bug, which points out that Bill's true identity is a spy. Bill flees home in panic, accidentally shoots and kills his wife, and has to follow the instructions of the strange creature to seek refuge in the "Zone" in the Middle East. The local black meat farm owner, the American writer and his wife who resembled Joan, the gay businessman, and the women in the market all seemed to be part of a conspiracy. Bill created with the help of his own talking typewriter "Clark Nova" and kept getting closer to the truth of the conspiracy. After losing Joan again, Bill discovered the connection between the interval and Dr. Benway.
