The Legend of the West Chamber

This play is adapted, developed and performed based on "The Legend of Yingying" written by Tang Yuanzhen and "The Romance of the West Chamber" written by Yuan Wang Shifu. It is actually Yuan Zhen's autobiography. In the Tang Dynasty, the late prime minister Qianjin Yingying and his maid Matchmaker accompanied the old lady to Luoyang. When they saw refugees in the streets, they scolded the "Luoyang prefect" who met them. Unexpectedly, the person who was scolded became happier the more he was scolded, and it turned out that this person was actually Zhang Sheng, a talented scholar who was well-known throughout the country. Zhang Sheng originally relied on his talent and pride to despise the government. After being scolded, he took advantage of it and wrote the famous poem "Farmer's Resentment" to ridicule the government. Xia Chang, the prefect of Luoyang, was waiting for an opportunity to retaliate. He first sent a prostitute to seduce Zhang Sheng in an attempt to ruin his reputation. When his plan failed, he also tried to induce Zhang Sheng to express his dissatisfaction with the government and had him imprisoned. Zhang Sheng refused to give in and continued to criticize him. Later, his friends managed to rescue him from prison, but he had already developed a feud with the government.
