In 1947, Yan Zhensheng, the owner of a pickle shop in Qinfangju, Beijing, died because his brother was robbed by the national army when he was helping him buy soybeans in Hebei. Yan Zhensheng, who had adopted his uncle since childhood to fulfill his filial duty, wanted to marry another daughter-in-law for his biological father, Mr. Yu, in addition to his wife Lin Cuiqing, so as to continue the Yu family lineage. Mr. Yu fell in love with Mu Chunhua, who was dedicated to treating his father's illness. Although he married his wife out of filial piety, Yan Zhensheng and Mu Chunhua gradually fell in love with each other during their contact. In 1950, the new marriage law was promulgated, and Yan Zhensheng and Mu Chunhua divorced. In the decades that followed, Yan Zhensheng, Mu Chunhua, and Lin Cuiqing's family still supported each other and shared hardships.
