Around 1990, immigrating to the United States became a dream for many Chinese, especially artists. Not long after Beijing musician Wang Qiming (Jiang Wen) and his wife Guo Yan (Yan Xiaopin) came to the United States, which they had been longing for for a long time, their beautiful dreams suffered a blow. After several struggles, Wang Qiming failed to become an artist and was depressed for a while. He became a businessman and accumulated considerable wealth in just a few years. But suddenly looking back, he found that the losses and gains were hard to calculate: Although the smart and beautiful Achun (Wang Ji) became his confidante, Guo Yan also ran away from his biggest business rival David (Robert Daly).
