In 1952, the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps recruited female soldiers in Shandong. Deputy District Chief Hao Yulan was forced to put her marriage on hold in order for the recruitment to go smoothly, and took the lead in signing up to join the army. She led a group of Shandong women such as Erman, Zhao Feng, and Hu Cai'e to Xinjiang. In the life of farming, these Shandong women and the soldiers of the Corps fell in love one after another and started families. As winter turned to spring, under their hard work, the Gobi Desert changed day by day, and several couples also experienced joys and sorrows: company commander Zhan Tao was beaten in the lower body during a bandit suppression, and his wife Erman never left him, sticking to his love; Zhao Feng and Ge Jun finally joined hands after hardships, and Zhao Feng became the first teacher of Malianwozi Primary School; Geng Dapao and Hu Cai'e nurtured their offspring amidst the quarrel.
