Red Sorghum 2014

The story takes place in the chaos-ridden Gaomi, Shandong, which is exactly where the epic legend happened. The run-down landlord Dai Laosan (played by Han Tongsheng) is forced to make a living and insists on marrying his beautiful and strong daughter Jiuer (played by Zhou Xun) to the son of the Shan family who suffers from leprosy. Jiuer failed to wait for his childhood sweetheart Junjie to elope with him, but was kidnapped by the bandit Hua Ning. In the end, he escaped thanks to the rescue of bearer Yu Zhan'ao (played by Zhu Yawen). Jiuer walked into the tomb of a desperate marriage, while Yu Zhan'ao brutally destroyed the marriage and led her to find true happiness. No matter how much the villagers despised and cursed them, these two "dog men and women" lived out their true temperaments straightforwardly. They ran a sorghum winery, and Yu Zhan'ao even established an armed force to compete with all forces. With the outbreak of Japan's war of aggression against China, they also reached a critical point of fate... This film is adapted from Mo Yan's classic novel "The Red Sorghum Family".
