Fan Mansion Courtyard

This play tells the story of two county magistrates in the late Qing Dynasty who retreated from Shanxi to Peking after seeing the current situation in chaos. Various characters in the family participated in social life in different roles, including Master Fan and Master Shi who had old ideas but always adhered to national integrity; There is Guangwen who believes in the Three People's Principles; there is Lingzi, the maid of the Fan family who only wants to be a master regardless of the consequences; there is Erxin, the daughter-in-law of the Fan family who commits suicide because of a feudal arranged marriage; there is the wife Yueniang who pays the price of her life for fighting for women's freedom and independence; and there is Nianhe Guangwu who devotes himself to the revolutionary cause. The central character of this play, Guo Caisan, is a figure with strong traditional concepts. The whole play runs through the rise and fall of the entire Fan Mansion Courtyard through Guo Caisan's perspective. He started out as a footman in Fan Mansion and became the great steward of Fan Mansion by virtue of his personal ability. When the Japanese invaders occupied Peking, he was forced by the Japanese to become the director of taxation.
