In Detroit in the winter of 1995, every weekend musicians would gather at a Hip-Hop club called The Shelter for one-on-one one-minute performance competitions. Jimmy Smith (Eminem) was an alternative white among many black musicians. Although he was very capable, he would get stuck every time he performed on stage and only received boos and jeers. In addition to having to brave the embarrassment of being kicked off the stage by a booing crowd, Jimmy Smith also had to deal with the embarrassment of living in a cramped trailer with his mother (Kim Basinger) and half-sister. His mother's boyfriend, the parallel relationship between blacks and whites, his work and relationship, etc., are also pressures on him. He tried to break through the bonds of family and group and express his anger and dissatisfaction with life through music. However, the first thing he had to solve was to overcome his timid self.
