In Kawarata in 1945, the cherry trees planted with great care by Erentetsu (Sayuri Yoshinaga) bloomed. These were seeds brought back from Japan by her husband Tokujiro (Hiroshi Abe). In August, the Soviet Union invaded Minamikarata. Tetsu and his sons fled to Abashiri, Hokkaido. They lived in poverty in the cold weather and with no food and clothing. Tetsu always protected the child and raised him up. Time goes by, in 1971, the grown-up second son Shujiro (Masato Sakai) and his wife Mari (Ryoko Shinohara) returned to Japan from the United States with their successful careers. After reuniting after a long separation, Shujiro feels quite uneasy about his old and slightly strange mother. At this time, the taboo memory door hidden deep in the hearts of mother and son is about to be opened.
