This film is adapted from Cong Shen's play of the same name. In a new workers' village surrounded by green trees, Ding Haikuan, the workshop director of an electrical machine factory, and his family live in a two-story building. He lives downstairs with his wife and youngest daughter, while his son Ding Shaochun, daughter-in-law Yao Yujuan, and his in-laws live upstairs. Ding Shaochun was born into a worker's family. Influenced by his family, he had a simple mind since he was a child. After joining the workforce, he worked as a worker in his father's workshop. He turned out to be a young man with ideals and ambitions. He was active, enthusiastic and responsible in his work. He was selected as an advanced producer many times. Since he fell in love with Yao Yujuan and got married, he has been living with his mother-in-law, who once ran a fresh goods shop. This mother-in-law is good at speculating in business, and does everything possible to pursue food and clothing. In order to make money, she does not hesitate to harm others, benefit herself, and harm the public and private interests. At the same time, she often instilled the idea of ​​eating, drinking and having fun into Ding Shaochun, which gradually caused subtle changes in Ding Shaochun's thoughts. Ding Shaochun began to dislike the simple style of his family and pursued enjoyment in life. He borrowed money to buy fashionable clothes such as leather jackets and woolen pants.
