"He" (Alan Rickman) ) is an unknown book editor in London. After experiencing a tragic failure in his writing career, he can only write poetry in his spare time. While despising his mediocre job, he regrets his failed love and gradually enters decadent middle age. "She" (Emma Thompson) is "his" old lover. After leaving him, she married a very prestigious writer and lived a glamorous life in Paris. After being separated for 15 years, the two met again for lunch at a restaurant they used to frequent. "He" went to the dinner with full expectations, but found that the restaurant had completely changed, and everything he was familiar with was nowhere to be found. "She" was still beautiful, but not as he remembered it, the food was still the same, but the conversation was not as satisfactory. Is this all just his fantasy of indulging in poetry, or has he really been abandoned along with everything that has grown old? The film is adapted from Christopher Reid's narrative poem of the same name, for which the poet won the "Masterpiece of the Year" award at the Costa Book Awards in 2010.
