Antarctic Story

In February 1958, the observation ship sent a plane to pick up the first batch of expedition team members from the Showa Base in Antarctica. Before leaving, Shioda and others tied up 15 birch dogs and left them for the second batch of team members who were about to come to take over. Unexpectedly, due to extremely bad weather, the second batch of team members was unable to fly to the base. The original plan was canceled and all team members will return home together. Shiota and Ochi strongly requested to take back the Hutai dogs, but in the end they couldn't do it. After returning to Japan, Shioda could not shake off his inner guilt, so he resigned from his position as a lecturer at Hokkaido University and visited the homes of those who had provided the dogs one by one to apologize. Under Ochi's promotion, a bronze statue was built in Wakkanai City to commemorate these sacrificial dogs. At the same time, in the ice and snow of Antarctica, eight birch dogs broke free and went out to search for food. They died one after another in the harsh environment. A year later, the scientific expedition team came to Antarctica again. Shiota and Ochi returned to the base and found the two surviving birch dogs...
