Rice Riot

In 1918, Matsuura lived with her husband and three children in a fishing village on the coast of Toyama Prefecture. Men in the village have left home to fish, while their wives stay at home, consuming large amounts of rice every day to feed their families. Matsuura's daily job is to drag bags of rice to the shore. As Japan sent troops to Siberia, rice prices began to soar. The women gathered together, begged rice stores to sell rice at cheap prices, and tried to stop merchants from shipping the rice away, but all failed. After local reporters reported the incident, the news quickly spread to local media outlets, and the commotion spread across the country. Eventually, the women's patience reached its limit and they decided to take further action. The film is derived from real events in Japan's Taisho era and tells the story of an unprecedented "rice riot" initiated by women.
