The protagonist Nyima crushed his biological mother to death, unable to suppress the grief and self-blame in his heart. With a handful of loess stained with his mother's blood, he kowtowed alone and worshiped Lhasa as long as his body, but it still did not eliminate the ever-present grief and self-blame. On the way back, Nima meets an old man who is magnanimous and persistent, but also empty and lost. The two travel through the vast Gobi Desert, influencing each other and redeeming each other. Finally, the protagonist regains the courage to live and his own relief, and spreads the loess stained with his mother's blood on the place where the tragedy originally occurred.
