House Scene

July 1984, Varda in I saw an exhibition called "Le vivant et l'artificiel" (The Living and the Artificial) in a nursing home in Avignon. In the exhibition hall, artworks coexist chaotically with animals, artificial hearts, and moldy walls. The visual shock made her unable to control herself for a long time, so she decided to lead us back to the dangerous place. We see houses, some empty, some full. As time goes by, strange traces are left. In addition, Varda also met the "maid" Yolande Moreau and the "old lady" Marthe Jarnias in "No Home" in this nursing home. Varda said: "Under the shaking of the high-speed train, I couldn't stop myself from thinking about the incongruous images that my mind was trying to absorb. As soon as I arrived in Paris, I called Louis Bec and Bernard Faivre d'Arcier and asked them to let me photograph the exhibition, not to understand it, but to draw inspiration from it. They agreed. A few days later, we set off for a shoot.
