Family Portrait

In his later period, Visconti liked to use the conflicts and entanglements within aristocratic families as his main theme. After all, he himself was born into a noble family. This film belongs to this genre, but it is one of his least known. His old partner Lancaster plays a retired American professor who collects paintings and lives in a luxurious apartment in Rome. The film examines various conditions within an aristocratic family through his perspective. The family moved into the house above the artist. The family was full of depravity, hatred, jealousy and other unknown inside stories. The old professor had irreconcilable conflicts with them and plunged himself into madness and chaos.
