Director Brian. G． Hutton's attempt to make a war adventure film in a comedic way did not work very well. However, the protagonists all have distinct personalities and good performances, especially Clint. Eastwood's performance was well received by the audience, and the storyline was whimsical, so the film still maintained a certain degree of entertainment.
