Like most families, the Jarrett family leads a stable and peaceful life. Calvin (Donald Sutherland) is not only an upright lawyer who is dedicated to his work, but also plays the role of father and husband very well. He has been married to his wife Beth (Mary Tyler Moore) for more than 20 years, and their relationship is extremely stable. As the eldest son of the Jarrett family, Burke (played by Scott Doebler) enjoys more care and love, while the younger son Conrad (played by Timothy Hutton) does not care about it. In an accident, Burke drowned. The grief-stricken Beth took out her anger on Conrad, who was with Burke at the time, which made the latter very painful and self-blame.
