Daughter of the Dark

Leda (Olivia Coleman) went to the beach for vacation alone. On the beach, she noticed a young mother and daughter and could not look away. Their high-profile relationship and their noisy, no-nonsense family members unsettle Leda, who recalls the fear, confusion, and labor of new motherhood. An unintentional move threw Leda into an inner world that even she felt strange and ominous, where she saw her past: when she was a young mother, she made an extraordinary choice and ushered in a series of consequences. The film is the directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal, who adapted the screenplay for the film from Elena Ferrante's novel.
