Swedish doctor Anton (Mikael Persbrandt) ) works in a refugee camp in Sudan all year round, facing the pain and death caused by armed violence every day; when on vacation, he flies back to Denmark and takes turns taking care of his two sons with his estranged wife Marianne (played by Trine Dyrholm).
