In Sweden at the beginning of the 20th century, social turmoil was aroused, and both material and spiritual life were lacking. Maria (Maria Heiskanen) is an ordinary housewife who manages a not wealthy family. An accidental gambling won her a camera, and her life changed. She began to secretly learn to take photos, and became very fascinated by it. She took pictures of the growth of her children and the beautiful scenery she discovered casually. Slowly, she began to be able to take pictures of her neighbors and earn some money. They were also very satisfied with the photos. When the king came to visit, she was also invited to take pictures... Of course, all this had to be done behind the back of her alcoholic husband. Frequent printing of photos makes Maria get acquainted with Paterson (Jesper Christensen), the owner of a small local photo studio. He is her boss, always praising her talent and encouraging her to take pictures.
