Fishing in the Sea

The fishing industry in Malta is declining day by day. In order to support his wife and children, Jesmark has to take risks and try the black market fishing trade. The film has a very realistic style. From the perspective of local fishermen in Malta, the film explores various social issues and cleverly intersperses it with a touching family story, presenting the tragic truth behind the beautiful scenery of the Mediterranean. Many characters in the film, including the male protagonist, are played by local fishermen, and their simple and unpretentious characters are played in a real and natural way. The film was the first Maltese film to debut at the Sundance Film Festival, and eventually won the Special Jury Prize in the World Cinema section of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
