After the death of his mother, young Guy was adopted by a family of American and Japanese descent. Guy, who grew up in this environment, not only learned Japanese, but was also very familiar with Japanese customs. The Pearl Harbor incident broke out, and Guy's adoptive parents were sent to international asylums on suspicion of being of Japanese origin. Guy's two older brothers joined the army as American citizens and were sent to fight in Europe. Guy, who was fluent in Japanese, was recruited as a translator by a unit of the U.S. Marine Corps. The U.S. military launched a campaign to attack Saipan, which was occupied by the Japanese army. Guy also joined the war with the army. During the battle, Guy's friends were shot and killed one after another. In order to avoid bleeding more, Guy requested to go to the Japanese army to persuade them to surrender. Guy, who was in danger, went through many hardships and finally made the Japanese troops on the island lay down their weapons and accept peace.
