The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by American novelist Thomas Cobb. Byrd Blake (Jeff Bridges) is an alcoholic, down-and-out blues country singer. While performing in Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, he met Santa Fe newspaper reporter Qin (Maggie Gyllenhaal). On the verge of bankruptcy, Byrd rushes to Phoenix to open a concert for his old student, the new country star Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell).
