George (Charles Boyer) is a Frenchman of Romanian descent. In order to make money to support himself, George is now engaged in the business of selling his body in Mexico. George's biggest dream is to one day travel to the United States, obtain American citizenship, and get rid of his miserable past. For this reason, he made a careful plan. George decided to find an American woman to marry so that he could successfully become an American, then kick this poor woman away, and then bring his truly beloved woman Anita (Paulette Goddard) to live with him in the United States. Although she is unwilling to give up her lover to others, Anita knows that if she wants to get anything, she must first give something. Soon, George met a woman named Amy (Olivia de Havilland) in the United States.
