Mary (Maureen O'Sullivan) and Brick (Henry Fonda) are a young couple about to get married, and their relationship is very good. Brick is a taxi driver. He spent a lot of money to buy a taxi and decided to open a taxi company with his good friend Joe (Alan Barkeste). Just the night before Mary and Brick were to get married, a horrific robbery occurred at the cinema. Three robbers drove away in a taxi after killing a cinema employee. The police immediately launched an investigation into all nearby taxi drivers, including Brick and Joe. Unexpectedly, the eleven witnesses present all identified Brick and Joe as the robbers, and the two were imprisoned. In order to prove her husband's innocence, Mary traveled around to collect evidence, but was obstructed by the police.
