The cold and rough tramp Johnny (played by David Thewlis) came to London to find his ex-girlfriend Louise Clancy (played by Lesley Sharp). He came from Manchester, an industrial city with serious unemployment problems, to the metropolis London, which is intertwined in light and darkness. Johnny met Louise's roommate Sophie (Katrin Cartlidge), and the two had sex in the apartment that day. When she woke up, Sophie, who had fallen in love with Johnny, received a cynical and cold rejection from Johnny. Cynical Johnny not only hates women, but also hates everything he does with him. He had sex with a strange woman indifferently, and faced the world violently in despair. The film won the Best Director Award in the main competition of the 46th Cannes Film Festival in 1993. The leading actor David Thewlis won the Best Actor Award for this film. The film was also shortlisted for the Palme d'Or in the main competition of the 46th Cannes Film Festival.
