Shops on the Main Street

In 1942, in a small town in occupied Slovakia, the Germans were presiding over the construction of a huge wooden monument, but the local carpenter Tony (Jozef Króner) did not care about this. His wife's nagging had already troubled him enough. Tony's sister's life improved greatly after marrying an officer. Tony also borrowed his brother-in-law's rights and received a piece of paper to obtain ownership of a Jewish store on the street. The shop owner is a 78-year-old Jewish widow Lautman (played by Ida Kaminska), who is deaf and blind. When Tony gets entangled with her, she discovers that the store is an empty shell and has not many goods. However, taking care of Lautman can be paid by the Jewish organization, so Tony helps in the store without telling his wife, but claims to be the store manager. Soon, the Germans began to take Jews into custody and transport them to concentration camps. Tony wanted to hide Lautman, but he experienced tremendous suffering in his heart. Outside the store, the Jews gathered under the monument. Inside the store, Tony faced an unknown old woman who drank to drown her sorrows... This film won the 1966 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
