A cargo ship exploded in the Port of San Pedro, California, killing 27 people and leaving $90 million missing. After the accident, FBI agent Bai Jiqi was waiting for the unconscious survivor in the hospital; Customs agent David (played by Chazz Palminteri) interrogated another survivor, Gent (played by Kevin Spacey), who had received a pardon order. Gent confessed that Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Fate (Benicio Del Toro), McManus (Stephen Baldwin) and Du Xueni (Kevin Pollack), who were killed in the accident, as well as himself, were taken to the police station six months ago as a suspect in a truck robbery and spent the night.
