The novel itself is based on the "Pozzetto Massacre" that occurred in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, in 1986 - an incident in which a Vietnam War veteran killed 29 mostly strangers and then committed suicide (the Wikipedia entry states that there were 30 victims in total, and the killer was killed by the police). The film tells the stories of three different groups of characters: a mother who killed her three children and a priest who wanted to be loyal to God; Paula who was forced to become a prostitute; an English teacher who was a Vietnam War soldier and her female student Natalia... They are all struggling in a world shrouded by their inner fears, desires, pain, and external temptations.
