Birds Down in the Harbor

This film is considered the first Flemish film and the first Belgian film. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 9th Cannes Film Festival. The protagonist of the story is a homeless young man whose name and origin are unknown. He always wanders the streets late at night. He has always wanted to leave by boat, but he was unable to do so because he did not have the relevant documents. By chance, he met a little girl who was a war orphan and now lived very unhappy in the home of her adoptive parents. The two equally lonely people soon became friends.
