Grand Dawn

The prototype of John Woo's "The World". Alan Dillon plays the role of law enforcement detective Gawain for the first time in this "Return to Righteousness". In order to disrupt the drug trade, he goes to a quiet town on the seaside to investigate the case, and meets the beautiful Garfield (Gabriel DeLore). Unfortunately, the story of handsome men and beautiful women is not a guarantee of happiness, because the beautiful woman turns out to be the mistress of a trafficker and an old friend. Two friends, one black and one white, fall in love with the same woman. How should they choose between friendship and love? Mayville's minimalism is fully utilized in this film, with concise dialogue, short scenes, a minimal score, and even Alan Dillon's performance is more restrained than in other films. The opening scene of an armed robbery is cold and compelling, using the wind and rain to create an atmosphere, and the scene is exquisitely arranged, which is beyond the reach of ordinary genre films. Mayville became ill during the filming of the film, and the film became the director's final return.
