故事发生在1942年11月的严冬，伴随着太平洋战争的爆发，世界反法西斯战争进入了新的阶段，而抗日战争也进入最为关键同时也是最为艰苦的时期。为了剿灭敌后抗日根据地的有生力量，日军向华北地区发动51大扫荡。由于缺少医护人员，中共方面募得13名爱国青年前往平西抗日根据地，结果在途中遭到日军战斗机的无情轰炸和扫射，最终只有一名女护士活了下来。大人们倒在了血泊中，伴随着战火出生的孩子们不得不拿起手中的枪。孩子们思念着妈妈的臂弯，祈祷和平的到来。他们用稚嫩无邪的双眼张望着这个血肉横飞的世界，更无奈看着自己的鲜血迸出染红天空。 “沿长城向西”，是孩子们寻找根据地和希望的唯一支柱……
