故事发生在解放前的南方地区，这里生长着五位快乐活泼的少女，但她们逐渐认识到身为女人的悲哀。明桃（沈蓉 饰）被后娘许配给一个肺痨鬼，身不由己；爱月（陶慧敏 饰）眼见奶奶八十寿辰，却不被允许上桌吃饭；荷香（剧雪 饰）目睹哥嫂破裂的婚姻，想要追寻自由的爱情却不能；桂娟（吉雪萍 饰）的姐姐难产而死，自己却要遵循母命为姐夫续弦；年龄最小的金梅（池华琼 饰）则由爹爹早早定下亲事。 女孩们相信仙娘（金棣 饰）所说的，未出嫁的女儿最为清新雅洁，她们相约二月初八这天共赴黄泉……
