一心求功名的书生杨予畏（邢岷山 饰）荒斋苦读，在此结识了美丽鬼魂连琐（傅艺伟 饰），人鬼之间渐生情愫，得知阴界白无常想让连琐给他作妾，予畏将其挫败，并将连琐带回自己家中。连父（韩廷琦 饰）看不起身份低微的予畏，拒绝将女儿许配给他。进京赶考的予畏途中遭遇不测，幸得狐狸精乔娜（周迅 饰）一家相救，并收留他在家中养病备考。再次上路的予畏被桂花精聂小倩（胡天鸽 饰）调戏，但他不为其美貌所动，聂小倩见予畏乃真君子，授予他躲避妖魔秘诀，并施法让予畏在考场上登上龙虎榜。返乡途中，他义救乔娜一家免遭雷霆劫难，待回到连府，方知痴心等他的连琐早已悬梁自尽……
