方德胜（刘德华 饰）和何宝玲（刘锦玲 饰）是同乡，亦是青梅竹马的恋人，彼此之间感情十分要好，然而，方德胜的心中怀揣着成为演员的理想，为了实现这梦想，方德胜不得不离开老家，离开何宝玲，来到大城市，奔向自己的远大前程。 一次偶然中，方德胜遇见了兰姐（吴家丽 饰），后者对方德胜十分赏识，在兰姐的推荐之下，方德胜得到了电影《天长地久》中男主角的角色，让他没有想到的是，此片的女主角，竟然正是何宝玲。在一连串的误会之中，方德胜以为何宝玲背叛了自己，两人自此陷入了剪不断理还乱的情感纠葛之中，并双双为此付出了惨痛的代价。
