故事发生在一九三七年的流溪村，开朗少年潘冬子的父亲是一名红军战士，一次偶然中，潘冬子结识了红军赤卫队的队长修竹，帅气勇敢的修竹是小小的潘冬子内心里最崇拜的所在。在赤卫队的保护下，流溪村的村民们过上了幸福快乐的日子，然而，赤卫队不可能一直留在此地，最终，潘冬子的父亲和他们一同踏上了长征的旅程。 赤卫队一离开，大汉奸胡汉三便带领着他的爪牙开始在村中作威作福，村民们重新回到了水深火热之中。在一场意外中，潘冬子的母亲为了保护村民们而不幸牺牲，这是潘冬子第一次尝到人生的苦楚和无奈。然而，潘冬子并没有就此一蹶不振，而是自强不息，最终成长为了成熟可靠的热血少年。
