不戒（方虎 饰）乃威震八方的铜头铁罗汉，这日他奉明惠法师差遣，携带信物，前往开元寺迎取稀世珍宝《释源真经》。消息传出，各路英豪侠士纷纷出动，都想独霸真经，称雄江湖。不戒在酒馆路遇黑龙会二爷，打斗中遗失佛珠，被行商（徐学礼 饰）捡得，纵恶徒索要明惠法师的亲笔度牒。在带发修行的村姑相助下，不戒安然脱险。在山神庙中，不戒识破前来抢度牒的旱地雷（解衍 饰）和花面狐（高鸿萍 饰）投毒诡计，让他俩自食其药。不戒一路凶险来到开元寺，行商派来的智聪（吕伟 饰）也己到此，两人各持信物，方丈（吴喜千 饰）难辩真假，后经设计层层障碍，方丈才将真经交与不戒......
