故事发生在清末江南某地。郑家和曹家因祖冤结仇几代，老死不相往来。当时大清朝摇摇欲坠，社会动荡不安。曹家二少爷曹光汉（朱雨辰 饰）受西方民主思想影响，在瑞典机械师路卡斯（MartiWaIIstrom 饰）帮助下，开办了一家火柴厂，以振兴民族工业。其父曹光器（张国立 饰）却有难言之隐，妻子曹金氏（朱茵 饰）与他人通奸生下孽子耳朵（侯祥 饰），由于娘家地位显赫，加之为曹家创下辉煌家业，光器只好忍气吞声。光绪帝驾崩后，曹家逐渐落败，受郑玉松（张志坚 饰）影响，曹光汉加入了与官府作对的蓝衣会，不久身陷囹圄。期间，妻子玉楠（宋佳 饰）与路卡斯偷情怀孕，所生异种被曹老爷赐名子春，孩子出生当日，曹光汉被斩首示众。奸夫路卡斯暴毙机房，处死孽子的重仼赋予了耳朵......
